Kodak Black is a 20-year-old rapper from Florida who rose to prominence in 2015 when famed Canadian rapper Drake posted a video of himself dancing to one of his songs, SKRT. After that, Kodak signed with Atlantic Records. He rose to fame after his debut studio album Painting Photos was released in 2017. Kodak has been compared to Lil Wayne, another Louisiana rapper who rose to prominence early on. His style has also been compared to that of American rapper Boosie Badazz, his biggest idol, with whom he shares a no-frills localized brawl.

His first mixtape Project Baby was released in 2013. Kodak Black is well known for his hits No Flock and Tunnel Vision as well as his many run-ins with the law even as his music is often about past and future criminal misdeeds. His first arrest was for burglary and at the time of the arrest he was not even 16 years old. Kodak got his first life-threatening charge for Grand Theft Auto while in college. He was placed in a youth detention center three times in one year and then put on probation.

Kodak Black was born on June 11, Dieuson Octave1997, in Pompano Beach, Florida. He started rapping in elementary school and started going to a local trapline to record music after school. Growing up, he often read dictionaries and thesaurus to improve his vocabulary. This helped him excel in school as he beat high school students in bee spelling.

He ventured into rap at the age of 12 after becoming a member of a rap group called Brutal Youngnz and adopting the stage name. J-Black. He then joined another local rap group called The Kolyons He adopted the username “Kodak Black” when he joined Instagram and it later became his stage name. In 2014, Kodak Black enrolled at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach to continue his high school education there.

Octave has been a controversial figure mainly due to his legal issues and social media interactions. His Instagram account reached an all-time high in January 2017 when he posted a live video with six other men as a lone woman performed sexual acts on them. He then posted an unrepentant message on Twitter about the incident which read: ‘If I could change I swear I would…I’ve tried everything but I’m so scared.

In June 2017, he commented on his preference for light-skinned girls over dark-skinned girls. It got him a lot of backlash on Twitter, forcing him to delete his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

However, Black’s mother was reportedly down after one of her son’s hearings in which he was found guilty of breaching house arrest.

An unidentified man uploaded video of a supposed crime scene claiming the rapper was shot twice in the chest.
